Summer Contest

All my favorite bloggers have been hosting these wonderfully fun contests, and I was feeling left out… So.. I’m hosting a contest!

Though I of course have to be difficult. No sweet little comment will make you eligible. You must work for your prize. Though I must say it is a fun prize. And worth the work.

To Enter: Post an entry on your own blog telling your favorite summer memory. Can be past or present. Can be funny, romantic, crazy, or relaxing. Then leave a comment below with a link to your entry so we can all share our stories. We all may be melting and dreaming of the cool days to come with scarves and tea, but that doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate the goodness that comes with summer as we watch it slowly slip away and into fall. The deadline to enter is Monday August 4th at 11pm (pacific time). The next day I will randomly draw a winner.

Please include this badge in your blog post:

Don’t have a blog? Well why in the world not?? Okay okay, well you can leave your story in a comment below and still be entered.

And of course because I wouldn’t make you all do something I wouldn’t do, here is my favorite summer memory:

The first time I knew Cale was the one.

Growing up, Cale and I were both on the same summer league swim team for one summer. The one summer that Cale actually agreed to do it. I had myself my very first “boyfriend” (not Cale), who was also on the swim team. And I use quotes because we were thirteen, and I don’t even think we ever held hands even. But anyways, close to the end of the three month long season, my “boyfriend” left for Mexico for a week. Well during that week, the swim coach had all the swimmers over to watch Jurassic Park on a movie screen in his backyard. We all laid out blankets and sleeping bags and got together to watch the movie. Somehow Cale and I ended up on the same blanket. We were good friends by this time, having joked around all summer long at swim practice and outside of swim practice.

The sun went down and the movie projector started. As the sunlight disappeared into the hot summer night sky, I found myself lying on this blanket with not just my friend but with someone I began to get feelings for. This was the very first time I had made this realization. My stomach had butterflies stirring for this boy with whom I was goofing around and playing footsies, and had this been yesterday I would have not have given it a second thought. But now everything was different. So there we stayed throughout the movie, swatting away bugs, watching dinosaurs eat things, with me burying my head into the blankets during the scary parts, and blushing when my arm would accidentally brush his.

I left that night knowing that something had changed. And only being thirteen, I knew it was life-changing big.

Man, I had no idea just how life-changing.

YAY! I’m a huge sucker for contests, especially with odds like these! And while I’m sure I have several wonderful summer memories, I’ll tell you about my most recent little vacation…which ended yesterday! Since I’m one of those without a blog…here’s my story…

A little over a week ago, my husband, kids and I loaded up and headed to Idaho. My husband’s parents just retired and were moving to Idaho where his sister and her family already live. So my husband and his son drove the Uhaul full of his parents’ stuff while my step-daughter and I followed behind in my car for the 19 hour trek to Kamiah, Idaho! Many miles, pictures (which will be on my Myspace shortly) and scary curves passed before we finally arrived for a week of fun and relaxation. And that’s exactly what it was!

Their town is very tiny (population 1,060!) and they live at the top of a mountain which is about 20 minutes from the main town (and you have to go on a big, scary rode to get up and down the mountain-EEEKKK!). So the majority of our time was spent in the country, with the family, playing card games and eating yummy home-cooked food and just enjoying our time together!! My husband’s sister has 5 wonderful children which I had only met a couple of times before so it was amazing to get to know these little people and see their way of life. They have a small farm with goats, a horse and chickens. I helped milk a goat one evening (and for anyone who knows me, that is VERY uncharacteristic of me! I’m a city girl through and through!!!), and I also got to ride the horse with my neice…it was so much fun!

One evening, we went to their little town softball game that the church holds once a week, complete with ice cream cones for everyone. It was so neat to see that things like this still happen in some towns. Living in a big city, this sort of thing is so uncommon. I felt like we had stepped back about 5 decades!

Leaving was very hard! Especially since it meant leaving my in-laws behind! We are very close to them (I’m blessed to have GREAT in-laws!) and usually have dinner with them a few times a month. Now that they are 1,000 miles away, it will likely be months or more before we see them. But the vacation and time with them was priceless!

Now it’s back to reality and I’m thrilled that I got back in the nick of time to enter this contest!
