Pot Pie Obsession

September 30th, 2008

Yesterday I got to read about Ashley’s veggie pot pie, Katie’s homemade pie she made this weekend, and of course to torture myself more, I went back and drooled over Lorie’s Tasty Tuesdays pot pie. I left determined to be having pot pie in my belly that evening.

Of course by the end of the list (which also included a pie dish because I realized that yeah, we didn’t have that either), I was already overwhelmed and trying to figure out when in the world this evening I would find time to get the ingredients and make the darn thing. After I got home from work, Cale and I went to the gym and got done at eight. That left us one hour before we had to be home for Heroes. So we went to Whole Foods because I had read that they have freshly prepared dinners; maybe pot pie would be one of them? Nope.

We hopped right back into the car and went to Safeway to purchase the one pot pie that Cale could overlook as not homemade: Marie Callender’s. See what a good wife I am? I stuff my husband full of over one thousand calories right after we go to the gym. And I got myself a much healthier version.

The instructions are much easier for these. Instead of chopping vegetables and laying out pie crusts, you just preheat the oven to 400 degrees, put them on a cookie sheet, and then let them bake.

mmm warm gooey pot pie

You know I almost feel bad, especially after reading Ashley’s quest for all things homemade, but then I remember, hey it’s me. And I’m on my own quest to acknowledge that I cannot be perfect and do it all. And that now includes accepting the fact that I only enjoy slaving away in the kitchen every once and a while. Though I will say that I do want to make my own pot pie very very soon.

Just not on a weeknight.

Dude, Marie Callenders is the best!! Marie Callenders pot pies and Stouffers mac n cheese. But never on the same night…hell, I wouldn’t even attempt that on the same week.

  2. Allison says:

Pot pies really are very good. My mouth watered when I read about Ashley’s pot pie. I hope you and Cale enjoyed your pot pies last night.

  3. Kourtni says:

This is so funny to me because Andy and I are DETERMINED to have pot pie tonight!!! We were having a craving for it last night, but I already had dinner made… and just like you, we were ready for a night on the couch with Heros and we finally watched last week’s The Office. lol. TONIGHT we ARE having pot pie though, even if I have to go the freezer section route too. =)

  4. This is more up my alley, I read the other pot pie posts last week and definitely felt guilty about my lack of cooking skills and/or drive to make a pot pie from scratch. As much as I would love to cook homemade meals every night for dinner the reality is that its not going to happen. I hope you guys enjoyed your pot pies and thank you!

  5. Hahah — this is SOOOO me! Just like how I posted my how-to recipe about making cake from a box mix! hahah. OH man – that’s funny you got obsessed with making pot pies – cuz so did I! Last night I bought all the ingredients – except now you reminded me I don’t have a pie dish! But it sucks because with going grocery shopping at two stores, the pet food store, getting a car wash and going to the auto store … there was no time to work out — let alone make the pot pie! So we ate cereal for dinner at 8:30. Man, I need more time in life!

  6. Mom says:

Ahhh…. you defintely are your mother’s daughter. I am beaming with pride. It’s a lot of work picking out the right frozen pot pie. Oh, I guess you forgot the one time I made something homemade. I’m sure it would have made great impact on your desire to slave away in the kitchen after a hard day at work. I’m impressed though…what did mommy do in a pinch? oh yeah… drive thru after soccer/swimming/softball/cross country/dance(for Cait). hehe

  7. Katie says:

Yay, you got your pot pie!! As long as it tastes good, who cares if it’s homemade, right?! If you ever have more time though, Lorie’s recipe was super easy to follow and I used the rotisserie chicken so it made it even that much easier. Yum!

  8. Alyssa says:

lol. Just like us. Reminds me of our trip to the store last night. I would buy the healthy frozen lunch meals and Chris picks the most unhealthy ones there…HAH.

  9. ashley.marie says:

Ooh, I hope you didn’t feel guilty because of my post!! :)

I was to inspire, not CONDEMN. Haha.

I love how on your grocery list you wrote “a chicken.” For some reason, that cracks me UP. Not like “chicken” or “chicken breast,” but A chicken. :)

  10. ashley.marie says:

    * want, not WAS. Blerg.

  11. Steph says:

    Alyssa,

Gosh no kidding. We go to sign up for the gym:

“What kind of results are you hoping for?”

Me: “Well I would really like to lose more weight”

Cale: “I want to bulk up.”

I think this was my eternal punishment.

  12. Steph says:

    Ashley,

Oh I didn’t feel bad! I totally love that you do all that! I am still amazed at the ketchup!

By the way you totally made me laugh OUT LOUD at my cube when you called me out on the chicken. I actually thought that when I was editing the picture. So appropriate though. I’m a complete cooking-idiot that I would go buy “a chicken”

  13. Lydia says:

I love pot pie, it’s seriosuly the best. And I do not blame you for not making it yourself. Those things are hard and store bought ones are delicious so why not right? Now you’ve got me craving for pot pie!

  14. Megan Mills says:

That’s it. We’re headed to the store for pot pies. YUM.

  15. Rene' says:

    Steph,

When you are trying to “please” Cale, you can remind him that his mother has NEVER made a pot pie from scratch. Marie Callendar and I have been on first name basis for years! :)

Just a note, if you are expecting company (read here, “big portions”) Costco makes pot pies from their roasted chickens. It is pretty good too!

  16. tristan says:

Well..I have a recipe for poppy seed chicken casserole…it tastes like a pot pie and it is super easy!! Want the recipe?

  17. wishcake says:

Um, so I love you for this. No, really. I want to hug you.

    Heehee.

I always see those awesome recipes for incredible dinners, and once I make out my grocery list for ONE MEAL I start to break into hives and realize that we could save money and time by just going with another one of our favorite go-to skillet meals. Man, I’m lazy. Man, I’m cheap. But I tell you, ONE OF THESE DAYS I will be a brilliant cook.

    One of these days.

  18. Seriously! All you pot-pie-ers are making me JONES for one. I am going to have to break down and do it, methinks. Yours looks yummy!

  19. Hollie says:

Pot pie…yum. Even the store brand frozen ones do it for me. :o )

  20. Talia says:

I’m buying things for pot pie TONIGHT!! :) Everyone has me craving it so badly… oh comfort food, how I do love you.
