30 Flippin’ Days of Fitness

May 5th, 2009

Miss Sensibly Sassy held me accountable for my workout fail today. Well maybe not in the “Stephanie I can sense that instead of working out you are parked on the couch with a bag of fritos in your hand. I can smell them from San Jose,” but in the super nice way of crediting me for the inspiration for her own 30 day workout challenge. And as much as I wanted to revel in that credit and continue with my fried corn chip goodness, my conscience just won’t let me. Here is my confession: I have skipped my workouts for almost a week now. Don’t bother going to do the math. I think I made it about three days before throwing in the towel.

At least I gave myself a fail in a cute font and cheerful color.

But anyway, I just can’t let Sarah down. I can’t let myself down. I need this kick in the pants. I need either someone or something to keep working out in the front of my mind. Enter:

THE CHECKLIST/COUNTDOWN/CALENDAR/HOLDING STEPHANIE ACCOUNTABLE SUPER FANCY SHEET OF PAPER!

Oh yes folks. The excessive amount of money I spend for monthly dues at a gym. The countless fitness DVDs. And I am relying on a sheet of paper, carelessly divided up into 30 boxes with a Sharpie. Each day that I complete my workout, be it the 30 Day Shred (even though it’s technically 27 minutes, I’m going to count it as 30. I think the thought of doing both the Shred and yoga to make up for the shortage in time was hindering my plan instead of helping it), Running, Swimming, Power Yoga, and maybe even making it to a spin class at our gym, I will mark it down on my checklist. Then at the end of the 30 days, I will have a written record of all the workouts I’ve done. Plus, as a more visual person, I think this will help me much more than just thinking in my head that I have to do a workout a day.

So hopefully this will work. This is going to freaking work. Does anyone want to join us with our 30 days of fitness? Maybe if we twitter-pressure each other into working out everyday we’ll all be able to get back into our workout routines that have fallen by the wayside over winter. Am I right?

If you are like me and need motivation to get off your hiney, here it is: 30 flippin’ days of fitness. I’m holding a contest. A contest that is completely relying on the honors system and is really put into place just to motivate. From May 6th through June 5th (there are 31 days in May), work out everyday for at least 30 minutes (the Shred counts as thirty). Then at the end of the month, I will post a blog asking who made it. Those people will be entered to win a bunch of goodies from my favorite etsy shops. I’ll get those details sorted out soon and release the prize details sometime next week.

Spread the word! You are welcome to yank that badge from my flickr and post it on your blog. There is strength in numbers, and I’d love to have the whole lot of you working out alongside me.

EDITED TO ADD: I know it’s getting later in the week and the word is spreading. I don’t want to discourage anyone from participating if they wander here late (and you know, since I decide to spontaneously start a contest the day before). Please join us! Chances are I won’t get around to drawing names for prizes until the week after the end date anyways since I’ll be in VEGAS! So if you don’t get to start until the 9th, then that’s a-okay. But that’s the cut-off for the official contest. But you’re more than welcome to join just for the health aspect.

Does playing in a softball game and like going for a walk at lunch count? If so, I’m down. If not, I dunno. I’m supposed to focus on studyng.
But we should DEFINITELY go swim laps at the pool on Friday. I will do it, so you must too. Lol.

  2. Steph says:

Of course it does. Is it thirty minutes? Are you being active? Then heck yes!

<3 And we are definitely going swimming. As long as you drive me to my car to get my swim bag :) hehe

  3. lucklys says:

um…but i’m already on day 7 of the shred as of tomorrow! do i get a headstart or do i have to go those 6 extra days at the end? poo…i mean, i was going to anyway…but still.

  4. Steph says:

    lucklys,

Yeah you can definitely move your days around a bit to accommodate what you’ve already been doing. :)

P.S. you totally rock for being on Day 7! Are you going to move up to Level 2 for Day 8? I’m not going to lie, I’m quite scared for what she might hold in Levels 2 and 3.

  5. lucklys says:

haha, i’m not planning to move up to level 2 until day 10. i figure if it’s 30 days, and there are 3 workouts, doing them each for 10 days is enough. plus i hurt my wrist yesterday doing pushups or something. i’m such a wimp!

i am scared out of my mind for what she has for level 2. i’m so scared, i haven’t even peeked at it to see what it is. i don’t want to psych myself out, haha

  6. Steph says:

oh duh. I don’t know why but I always get confused on the shred’s days. haha. I keep thinking it changes up each week. Well enjoy your last few days on level 1! I hope your wrist feels better!

  8. Caitlyn says:

doing it! it will give me motivation to do something on those non-spin class days.

  9. Rene' says:

I was really hoping to let school end and THEN go back to the gym. It has been too hard this semester teaching 150% load. ICK! But then, I do have my 30th (yes, thirty years) high school reunion at the end of summmer…. so what better time to get in shape. OK, I am in.

  10. Elizabeth says:

This is definitely what I need to get motivated! I actually just ordered the shred, so I’ll do a different workout until it gets here. I’m totally in!

  11. Meri says:

Ok, I’m going to try this too. I need some outside motivation and this just might work for me. I’m heading into the middle of finals, so hopefully I can swing it. I imagine I’ll need some de-stress breaks…seriously, one can’t study ALL the time.

  12. shannon says:

I wanna do the Shred!!! Anyone have an extra copy they want to send me? Hahah, jk jk. I’m in.

  13. Kyla Roma says:

That sounds amazing! I’m in! I walk every day but I’ll kick it up and go for a bike ride every night too – Count me in!

  14. I’m IN! Oh and for the record I thought I smelled Fritos…

  15. ashley.star says:

    I’m IN! This is perfect – I just started 10K training! :)

  16. Alyssa says:

I’ll do it. I’ll start off today with leg lifts in the waiting room. I keep it classy.

  17. Lisa says:

OK, does walking or hiking for 30 minutes count? That’s about all I can do. But I know I need to. Holy cow over here, since getting pregnant I’ve already gained five pounds. The feeling great and being hungry thing all the time… well I think it is going to turn me into a giant beached whale by the end of this pregnancy.

  18. Steph says:

    Lisa,

It definitely counts! Anything that you count as exercise is fine by me. I’m so glad you are feeling better this time around!

  19. Steph says:

    Alyssa,

You could do lunges down the hospital hallways :-D hehe

  20. Andrea says:

Yes, yes, yes! I need to do this, too! It’s going to be tough cuz I’m busy with moving this week, but it MUST BE DONE. Count me in!

  21. Allison says:

Count me in. I started with the 30 Day Shred Today. I will probably die by tomorrow, but it will definitely be good for me to get off my lazy butt and get myself into good shape for moving to California. Woot woot!

  22. Kourtni says:

Ooooooh… I’m TOTALLY in. I just read this today, so I’m extremely thankful that I went to the gym yesterday AND this morning (even though I didn’t want to)…. and so YES. I will join.
Oh.. .ps. I had already given up on working out tomorrow, but now I feel the peer pressure to do it anyway. HEHE.

  23. Ali says:

I’m in! Found you blog through Wishcake & Sensibly Sassy! Just bought the Shred so I’m ready!!!!

  24. amanda says:

ok, so i’m totally yanking your banner and joining this contest!! luckily i started the shred on monday!!

  25. E.P. says:

I’m totally late on this, but I need to join in. I feel rather tubby lately, and fitness as a challenge? I could do that. I’m starting tomorrow!

  26. michelle woo says:

I’m in! I JUST HAPPENED to work out yesterday and Tuesday so this must be fate. OK, even though it’s 10 p.m. right now, I’m gonna hit the gym. By the way, cute badge!!! Does it come in button form?

  27. Steph says:

    Michelle,

DUH! How did I forget that? Hehe. Added one to the post :) Thanks for the reminder.

  28. Talia says:

ok, I thought a lot about this, because I really want to do it. And heaven knows I NEED to!!! I’m ready to get back in shape.

Buuuut, I hesitated, because it has not been easy for me to find the time to work out lately, and I didn’t want to FAIL.

And then I wondered what you would say to me if you knew I opted out of your fabulous idea simply because I thought I might not get it done, and I was ashamed. :) Because really, you’re giving me the perfect motivation and opportunity to finally make working out a prioirty now that life is a little more normal, and to get this booty back in shape after 10 months of NOTHING.

so, to sum up: I’m IN!!! And I will do my very best, I promise. :)

  29. Steph says:

    Talia,

Yayyyy!! I’m so glad you’re giving it a go. I hope you’re able to find the time :) You could always get Emma in on the action with you. haha! Please tell me I’m not the only one who remembers this… lol!

  30. Je says:

I just stumbled on your site from MyWishCake.com, which I just started reading. I love a good challenge – I’m IN like SCHWINN.

  31. sara.jane says:

This is perfect timing! I just started my own fitness thing so I’m going to do this. *sigh* When this is over I’m rewarding myself with something, what? Not sure exactly! Glad I found your page in time—-which by the way I found you from Your Wishcake :)

  32. sara.jane says:

Oh, and for those who complete the contest…..are you going to make a “I made it through 30 Flippin’ Days of Fitness of 2009″ sidebar banner thingy? Who knows! Maybe this will turn into a regular fun thing on your site :)

  33. Lacey Bean says:

Oh just made it! I’m so joining in, I’ve done about 2 weeks of the Shred and I need to keep going!! Can’t wait!

  34. Amber says:

Great idea! I’m doing the 30-day shred challenge anyways and I’m on day 3, so I might as well jump into this challenge as well to keep myself extra motivated!!

  35. Lisa says:

I barely made last day to sign up! Count me in!

  36. calisara says:

totally need this buddy system! and yet i already see “obstacles” in the next 30 days. have owned the 30 day shred for a few months and keep lapsing! let’s kick our butts into overdrive! also, if you can spare an additional 10 minutes, i also like the kim kardashian fit in your jeans by friday (booty dvd). she is hilarious working out in full make-up & bra, but it is hosted by a real trainer, you can work out AND get a laugh no matter how many times you watch! abs + butt = awesomeness!
