There are certain things that are inherent to our being. For some, that is being loud and outgoing. Others, naturally cool and calm. And then there are those insane people who are “morning people.”
That would not be me. (as you can tell from my last entry I’d rather be up into the wee hours of the night)
This week I’ve been trying to train myself to be one. It’s time I stopped waking up with just enough time to hop in the shower, put on makeup/clothes, and half blow dry my hair before I’m already late to work. I’ve gone far too long without working out. Remember that time I got bronchitis? A month ago? Yeah I hadn’t worked out since. Not good at all. So yesterday and today I woke up earlier than normal, popped in a workout DVD and got moving. I’m even planning to jump back into doing the 30 Day Shred tomorrow. Cale will attest to how many times I pushed the snooze button, only to finally look at the clock and face that do or die moment. It was either drag my booty out of bed, or I wasn’t going to fit in my workout. And I did it! Both days. Thankyouverymuch.
In my ideal world, I would be able to work out in the evenings, but with my job and my commute, I never quite make it home in time to both eat dinner and workout. And well, since I’m obviously not skipping dinner, I would always skip my workout. I have finally admitted to the fact that if I want to be able to work out, I’m going to have to do it in the morning, unfortunately.
I’ve started this new adventure. I will be a morning person.
Are you a morning person? What is your secret?

I used to think I was a night owl… but when i started having to get up for work at 5am things changed. I actually like getting up early now, I’m just a bit cranky and need space for a little while. As long as I get enough sleep, I’m fine… so that means I’m usually in bed by at least 9pm. It sucks, but I get the whole day to do stuff!
I actually like getting up a bit earlier than most the people in our office. When I had to be out at the client that was further away and such, I got in the habit of getting up earlier and i kind of liked it. My only issue with working out in the mornings is my hair. I normally take a shower at night (20 minutes) and let my hair dry naturally (rather than 20+ minutes of blowdrying). Thus, my morning routine is cut down by 40+ minutes. If I work out, I’d have all that, then still have to curl or straighten the hair (20-30 minutes) and get ready. Ugh! But I really do want to get ready for that triathlon at the end of September, so I think starting next week, I’m just going to have to do the gym thing. *sighs*
Gotta start swimming on the weekends too. Ok, Steph, we gotta motivate each other!
Love the blog.
I was fine with getting up in the mornings right up until I moved in with The Boy, in which case now getting up early is HARD. He’s all warm and snuggly in the mornings, and now my sleeping patterns are different (and the sleep quality also different) so I’m finding it really really hard to get up in the mornings – I’m so exhausted in the mornings! I haven’t figured out how to get around it yet, but good for you for getting up early and working out! That’s awesome
Good luck with that..lol!
I love that pic..too cute!
I can do both. I love mornings and I really like the peace I get staying up late at night. So, I don’t claim to be either one. I make time to slide back and forth and make do.
There is nothing like watching the sun come up and see the first finches fly to the feeder outside the window at breakfast.
On the other hand, if the sun comes up and hits me in the face, my sleep is over, no matter how late I stayed up.
Enjoy your early mornings and save sleeping in for a treat.
I am totally a morning person. My secret? Having to be at work at 6 am. It has completely altered my body clock to waking me up on the weekends no later than 8 am. What I love about it? My days seem so much longer and more productive. And I still feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done that I want. I can’t imagine how I got anything done before I worked this job!
I am not a big morning person, so I am no help. But, I am thoroughly impressed that you’re getting up early to work out. That is dedication, go you!
Mister is a MEGA morning person and he’s rubbed off on me a lot- honestly, having a reason to get up (dog walking) is helpful, as is having coffee right off the bat. Beyond that I think it’s just about being stubborn and not letting yourself off the hook. Easier said than done!
uuugh. no way josé. if i had dogs to walk, like kyla said, i would probably be more for it, but because my only kick in the butt to get out of bed in the morning is that i don’t want to be in bed after 10am…i don’t have a whole lot of motivation. j’s not a morning person either, so that doesn’t really help my situation, though he doesn’t mind getting up to make breakfast while i shuffle myself out of my coma.
I was just born a morning person, but I do wish that I could stay up later and be amorning person…I want it all!
I find that if I drink even the slightest bit the night before, I WILL NOT get up early to workout. Except for last night, we drank two bottles of wine (please don’t judge) and I still managed to get up at 6:15 AM today to workout…But only because I had a friend who I said I’d meet for a run.
Soooo, I guess my advice is don’t drink (too much) the night before and/or make plans to workout with a friend.
I’m a morning person. Not in the sense that I particularly like getting up early, but I love how productive I am in the morning. I love getting to school before the rest of the crowd so I can get stuff done. I’d rather be productive in the morning and save my evenings for relaxing and having fun.
aw, mae-mae!!! She’s so cute.
I’ve been trying to be a morning person too… and so far, so good. Jessica and I pick each other up for early morning (5:30) spin class, and that helps SO much.
but really, I sometimes wish I didn’t have tp sleep. I love to stay up, but I love how much I get done when I get up early. Arg. No wonder I”m always tired
good for you, working out! That’s wonderful.
I’m only a morning person because I’m forced to be. EMT-Dad gets yp at 5 to be at work at 7, so I get up with him to make his coffee and eggs. (Its a long 24 hour shift and if it keeps him away from the drive-thru in the morning I’m all for it.) But by the time I’m done getting him out the door Shane wakes up, then when I think I can squeeze in a morning nap, the older two wake up. So at that point I’m up for the day.
I don’t know how I would function if I had an office job. If I don’t get some sort of nap in the afternoon I’m a grouch by 3 and I’m ready for the day to be over by 7.
Its like I saw the cupcakes and my brain stopped functioning. So, I have no good comment, just excessive drooling. And cupcake cravings.
