I graduated with my bachelor’s in May 2007, just a short bit of time before I got married. You know when they say time flies, they’re not kidding around because it’s already been over two years since I’ve been in school. After sixteen years of schooling, I was so ready for my “real life” to start. I was just itching for it the entire time I was in college. I was desperate to be married, living somewhere other than the dorms, with some actual disposable income. So desperate that it most likely hindered the amount I got out of my college experience.
Now having been deep into my “real life,” for two years, I’ve found that, yes, the life that I was waiting for is very much worth the wait. I do enjoy being self-sufficient, and I’m so glad I toughed it out and finished my bachelors. So much so, that tonight I’m starting back in college. I am starting my Masters in Taxation at San Jose State. Exciting as it probably sounds to my readers, I’m actually pretty psyched about it. Everything I’ll be learning will directly relate to my job, and I’m just ready to be back in a classroom again. We have a lot of trainings here at my work, but it’s much different being enrolled in a class that will accumulate into degree. A pretty piece of paper I can frame and gaze at longingly while patting myself on the back.

It will most certainly not be the same experience I had going to college the first time. I’m just taking one class a quarter; Thursday nights this time around. So while it’s not going to be exactly like my undergrad, I’m at a place in my life where I’m actually looking forward to sitting in a lecture and soaking in more knowledge. I’m hoping I get a lot out of it, especially since I won’t be wishing the time away in hopes for something bigger and better.
Remind me of this blog post when I’m about half-way through and am thinking Why in the world did I want to do this again??
How long have you been out of school (if you are), and have you ever thought about going back? Or if you are currently in school, what are you studying?

thats amazing!! go steph corwin!
i felt the same way when i went back to college last spring, i was just itching to go back on MY terms and just learn because I wanted to.
such an accomplishment! good luck pretty girl!
lol We wrote about the same thing today, only mine is where you might be in a few weeks, going “WHAT DID I SIGN UP FOR?” You’ll do so well at this though, and holy how practical could this be? You’ll have to build a wing onto your home for your money room when you’re finished!
WOO WHOO! I’m always so impressed by people who have gone back for their masters. I graduated in december 2003… and went RUNNING out of the last class I took. So, seeing people do what I could never do is always so impressive. Good luck hun!
that’s awesome!
and by the way, when I go to use the new subscribe address, I keep getting an error message. I don’t know if that’s happening to anyone else?
thatShortChick,
I noticed that today; I don’t know why my feed just hates me! So I’m going to try to fix it this weekend by doing a fresh install of wordpress. Thanks for the heads up, good to know it’s not just me.
I’m back in school after being out for a while. I’m doing a Master’s in Speech-Language Pathology. Not working, just going to school full time. And am busy busy busy and can’t wait for it all to be over.
I can see the appeal of going back though…just way in the future for me. I’d love to take some English classes again. I miss novels.
Good for you! I really, REALLY want to go back and get my master’s in photojournalism so I can teach somewhere along the line, but my work schedule will simply not allow for that. Which makes me really, really sad.
But it makes me so happy that you are going back to learn more. Let us know how it goes because I miss the classroom, too!
Congrats Steph! That’s very exciting! I have two semesters left in my BBA program, and I could NOT be more ready to be finished! I’m beginning to wondering what jobs there are in Michigan for a marketing major, but hopefully there will be something
I’ve considered starting my Master’s right away, but the jury’s still out on that one…
Keep us posted!
yay for you! That is really exciting!! It is so weird to be out of school after 21 years of being in school. I’m sure I will get used to it though
I am excited to hear all about this journey!
Congratulations! I’m so glad you’re going back — school is fun!
I’ve been out since 2005. I got my bachelor’s in 1999, moved to Chicago, had a few jobs I didn’t really care for and decided to get my paralegal certification. I loved the program and learned a lot, which resulted in me getting a job with a litigation firm working mostly on federal cases. I’m not a paralegal anymore, but my education led me where I am now — a really great place. I wish all good things for you, too!
Do you think you will ever not go back to school? Classes evolve, new information emerges and I feel that I will always be taking college classes throughout my life to enrich my mind and become more of a well-rounded person. Although I am just finishing my GE degree, I am pretty sure I will finish my Bachelors in Graphic Design and then continue onto a MFA (or something similar to this). How long do you think you will be at SJSU? I plan on moving to San Jose within the next two years to go to school!
I congratulate you on tackling your Masters- if I ever have tax questions I will definitely know who to go to! ;]
Awesome, a lot of people are now going for their masters. I’m impressed though since it’s actually hard finishing school then going back a few years later.
I’ve been out of college for 2 years now, hoorah! I don’t miss it one bit… I do miss friends, the social life, being involved with clubs and my sorority. I also miss knowing I had friends to go to if I couldn’t sleep at 3AM — living in the dorms and on campus housing with roommates was a lot of fun if I don’t think about the drama that we had.
Before I graduated, I thought about getting my masters but I wasn’t interested in what they had to offer with my field — Graphic Media Publishing.
Have fun and remember it’ll be worth it at the end of this journey.
it actually does sound exciting. learning is fun
…I know that sounds sarcastic but it’s totally not. lol. Congrats!
I think about it a lot. You know I was considering law school, but that’s increasingly less appealing to me. I think I’d rather get a masters or Ph.D in something really unuseful like Philosophy or Medieval History or something else equally ridiculous!
Wow – props to you for going back to school! I’m sure it will be well worth it in the end – and hey, if taxes are your thing then I say GO FOR IT. Heehee. I’m sure you’ll do just fine – better than fine. Once you get back into the swing of things and all!
As for me, I graduated with my AA when I was eighteen. After that, I was all, “I’m going to move to California and maybe study to be a marine biologist!” And then I was all, “No, I want to be famous!” And then I was all, “Okay, um, maybe I should go back to school and finish my last two years. I’ll start with this speech class I was avoiding. UGH.”
And now? Contrary to the advice of 90% of the people I talk to, I’m honestly thinking I’ll never go back to school. It sounds a little ridiculous and maybe immature, but every single thing I’m passionate about are things that don’t require a degree in order to do them professionally. Photography, crafting, writing. And I refuse to go to school “just to have a degree”. That’s not…me, I guess. More and more I come across people who have done it on their own, without degrees.
I feel icky saying that I don’t want to go back to school, but…I’m fairly sure I won’t. And I’m okay with it. Jay seems okay with it. My parents have supporting me in whatever decision I’ve made thus far (yay!). So…here I am.
Congrats Steph! That’s so awesome you’re going back to school! We are all very proud of you! Yay!
I would love to go back to school … but I have no idea what I’d like to study. Hmmmm. Must figure this out. Or if you come up with a master plan for my life (ha! a master plan indeed! hahah … you know, to get my master’s degree… I’m a dork) please let me know.
Good luck with your class!
I soooo want to go back. I’ve been graduated from university for 4 years (spent 7 years there getting 2 degrees) and I miss it. I liked being a student. Work is just blah.
Good luck with your class!!
You’re amazing.
You know what would have been awesome? Me actually finishing college to get my BA in SOMETHING lol! But what I wanted then isn’t what I want now so in a way it’s a good thing right?? At least that’s what I like to tell myself ;P
oh sheesh, the idea of even going back to finish my GE classes overwhelms me so HUGE props to you for going back for your Masters. Seriously, proud of you!
Congrats on going back to school!
I graduated with my Master’s in Education about 5 years ago. Currently, I’m not really in school, but I’m becoming certified as an RDI consultant for families of children with autism and other developmental delays. I’ve also been toying with the idea of getting my Ph.D.
