Birthdays are for pretty things and smiles

This time last year I held a Birthday Giveaway and offered up some tips on how to have oh-so-pretty nails with Sephora’s OPI nail polish.

Well this year, I decided that I’d like to give something away for my birthday again. Why? Well it’s just so darn fun. And there are so many of you I just love, and I wish I could have a huge birthday party with all of you, combined with wine, girly movies, and makeovers of course. Since I can’t logically do all that, I’d like to spread some fun and prettiness your way in honor of the fact that I’m steadily getting older.

Sigh.

Danni has a lovely little carousel necklace in her ohhellofriend etsy shop that I just fell in love with. Because if I may share a little tidbit about myself: I used to love all things carousel and unicorn related. I have a box of porcelain carousels stored safely away at my mom’s house. My room used to have a lovely little unicorn wallpaper border, all adorned with pastel colors. Really that necklace is something that the moment I saw it, it took me right back to that little girl, carefully organizing her figurines by height (seriously. That was me as a child. OCD much?)

What’s a birthday without some childhood photos?

this can become a part of your own jewelry box!

So for my birthday, I am going to buy this as a gift for one of you! All you have to do is leave a comment with one of your childhood obsessions, be it a boy band, the care bears, you name it! (One comment per person please!) The contest will close at 11:59pm on Friday December 11th, and I will announce the winner on December 12th.

Both comments and pings are currently closed.

Happy happy birthday (almost) to Steph! We are getting sooooo old! That’s probably not a nice thing to say, huh…hrmph!

One of mine was definitely The Little Mermaid! I even had a little mermaid birthday party with the REAL ARIEL. Not even kidding, you should be jealous. Must scan pics of this :)

  2. Jennie says:

    Oh, how pretty!

    (And happy, happy birthday lady!)

My childhood obsession was my teddy bear that I still have. I’m giving him to Kyle, although he’s got so many holes and is covered in dirt, I don’t know how grateful he’ll be for the gift.

  3. Lisa says:

    Happy Birthday!

Let’s see… there was the frog phase (blown glass, beanie babies, stuffed animals, figurines, everything frogs, it was quite ridiculous), then there was the Marvin the Martian phase, Keropi (of Hello Kitty fame) phase, glass/porcelin dolls phase, Barbie phase, but I think my favorite was the Victorian phase. I had a huge (and stinky) Victorian looking winged/stuffed chair in a corner of my room and REALLY old mounted photos from my mom’s hope chest adorning my wall and I was obsessed with Victorian architecture and I wanted to live in a Victorian house with a tower and I would draw pictures of Victorian houses and dresses all. the. time. I even dreamed up a Victorian style wedding. I was totally obsessed.

  4. Aww, Happy Birthday!

I have the same favorite possession as Jennie—my favorite possession as a child was my teddy bear, Pinky, who I still sleep with, and probs will ’til I die.

P.S. Something else Jennie and I have in common is that we’re meeting up in SF this weekend. You live in the East Bay…email me {titchblog AT gmail.com} if you’d be up for a little blog dinner on Friday. Would LOVE to meet up with you! xo

  5. I was so very obsessed with the movie “Dick Tracey”, I have no idea why but I loved that guy!

  6. Anna says:

Definately NSYNC and Backstreet Boys. I spent so much money on magazines, CDs, videos, and useless stuff. I knew so much useless information about them and still remember half of it. There was just an NSYNC quiz on jay leno and I knew all the answers I was pretty embarrassed. Oh and I knew the dances! Happy Birthday!!!

  7. Caitlyn says:

    Hmm…well lets see…

Minnie Mouse, Pocahontas, barbies, and Izzy (let’s not forget Izzy).

I loooove that necklace! (I hope you bought one for yourself too!)

  8. Rachel says:

i’m with Alyssa… totally the little mermaid. I used to make my mom blow dry my bangs so they looked like ariels. no joke.

  9. Lauryn says:

That’s such a cute photo of you!

I was actually obsessed with the Beatles when I was young, especially around the 3rd grade. I was absolutely in love with Paul McCartney, circa the 1960′s. My 8-year-old self had no idea that the guy was really older than my dad in real life.

    Happy Happy Birthday! :o )

    • Steph says:

Wow your little eight year old self was pretty cool! I had no clue who the Beatles were until I was way older. My musical tastes didn’t branch out much further than the Clueless soundtrack and No Doubt lol.

  10. Diana says:

Ha ha! I love Anna’s Answer, NSYNC and Backstreet Boys. I guess that would be mine too, but does it count if I never really great out of it? Went to the Backstreet Boys concert last November and it was AWE-SOME! Would you like to see my multiple pictures with the boys (or should the be called “men” now)? Lol.
Um, other than that I can’t really think of an obsession. I didn’t have any toys I was completely attached to (that I can remember). Never got into Beanie Babies, Stuffed Animals, Digital Pets, or anything. I mean, my sister and I had a TON of Barbies, but who doesn’t? I DID like Polly Pockets, but nothing amazing. *sighs* I was a pretty boring child.

  11. Leslie says:

wow, reading other people’s comments makes me feel old!

i was obsessed with troll dolls, pogs, and x-men cards. i saved my x-men cards, convinced they would be worth millions one day. needless to say, they aren’t. and i was the master of pogs – i dominated everyone at my elementary school. i remember i organized my troll dolls all the time, but i can’t remember what the organization criteria was. i want my troll dolls back now, they’d make a nice addition to my apt!

  12. Megan says:

    First off, happy birthday!

I, too, LOVED carousels. I had my own porcelain, musical carousel. Ah, memories. I was obsessed with horses, though. I love horse figurines and I wanted a horse so bad when I was a kid!

  13. Lacey Bean says:

I would say my two MAJOR obsessions when I was little were New Kids on the Block, and then 90210. And I use these two because with each one, I had EVERYTHING. Dolls, curtains, bed spreads, clothing, pins, other various items of swag, etc. :)

  14. I definitely was obsessed with all things BARNEY (as in the lovable, maybe slightly creepy?, purple dinosaur). I had all of the videotapes, knew EVERY SINGLE LINE (and song) and even had a barney raincoat and umbrella that I wanted to wear everyday.

  15. Elizabeth says:

You probably won’t believe this, but a friend of mine and I had a ‘Unicorn Club’ based off the one from the Sweet Valley Kids series. We were super cool and had our very exclusive, secret meetings under my trampoline. Yeah…

Other than that, I was obsessed with paper–I loved having lots of different textures and colors. I also collected rocks and had a rock polisher–that was fun!

  16. Erin says:

Happy Birthday! I adore that necklace!

So, as I kid, I was obsessed with unicorns. Lame, I know, but it’s true. I had a ton of unicorn figurines, and I watched my VHS of The Last Unicorn until the tape broke.

  17. E.P. says:

Happy belated birthday, lady! I love that photo of you! So cute!

Umm… when I was a kid, I was obsessed with horses. All kinds. I used to ride. I used to have all the figurines. I used to be a member of an e-mail club pertaining to them. (My boy about died when I told him about that one!) I was all kinds of nerdy.

  18. Olive Oyl says:

    Oh, fun!

My favorite childhood obsession was reading The Boxcar Children and Island of the Blue Dolphins. I dreamed of being abandoned by my parents, living alone on an isolated island, scrounging for food in the forest, and wandering around picking fruit from random orchards and fields.

Is that weird? :) I still read those books to my class every year. :)

  19. Amanda says:

    Yay birthdays!

When I was younger, I was CRAZY obsessed with *NSYNC. My walls were covered with photos. My friend and I started a website. I drove 6 hours to see them in concert after the one in my town got rained out by a hurricane. I think my parents were actually frightened for me.

    • Diana says:

Um Amanda, I went out of state to go to a “boy band” concert. 6 hours is NOTHING! Lol. I was totally one of those too. Still am actually!

  20. Heather Rose says:

A Very Merry Birthday TooooOOOooooo YOU!

I was totally obsessed with (brace yourself, I was a tremendously interesting child) Alice & Wonderland (okay, maybe THAT one isn’t too weird), The Beatles (with whom I am still in love) and my first crush…David Bowie. I was, like, 6. :P

I also had a tendency to dress up like Cindy Lopper, when unsupervised.

  21. Morgan says:

Happy Birthday, my sweet friend!! I hope you have the most fabulous day (eating all sorts of cheese, lol). :)

My childhood obsession was Hello Kitty. I am slightly ashamed of this.

  22. jimaie.marie says:

first of all, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! And second of all, wooooohoooo a giveaway!!!
When I was really young my obsession was all things horses. I had a mass collection of unicorns and My little pony’s and dreamed of one day owning a horse (my mom made that dream come true when i was 10!) but as I got older my obsession evolved into…BOYS! My mom used to buy me every issue of BOP! magazine and I would (oh so carefully) tear out pictures of Devon Sawa, JTT, Matthew Keegan, NSYNC, the Backstreet boys, etc. AND last but definitely not least, HANSON. Actually Hanson was first and then i discovered those other hotties but that’s neither here nor there ;) LOL!

That necklace is presh and I would love to own it, so CUTE! i hope i win! i hope i win!! :D hahaha!

  23. Talia says:

Oh, I love everything of Danni’s, her shop is one of my favs! And I’ve actually had my eye on this very necklace, so I’m going to hope I win!
CUTE picture, by the way. I love it.

I was obsessed with penguins when I was about 10 (or was I 14? I can’t remember. haha.) or so. I had penguin sheets (from Delia’s, so they were pretty cool), and a pretty good-sized penguin collection, of figurines and stuffed animals and the like. I was SOOO cool. :)

  24. Ok, how did I not comment on this post?! Tisk tisk! In my head I remembered that I didn’t comment on this and then left a comment saying “how did I not comment …” Apparently I didn’t do that either.

Anyway, Happy belated birthday! Hope you had a wonderful time celebrating! I think it’s so neat you’ve done giveaways on your bday the last two years in a row. You are such a generous, kind, unselfish girlie!

Back in the day I think I had a unicorn or carousal jewelry box of sorts. So fun. Oh, and I love that picture of little Stephie! Sooo adorable! I remember being obsessed with hanging up kitten posters in my room along with a few otter posters that I won from the orthodontist (I know, I’m too cool, right!?). I also LOVED parties and had their houses set up just so (NOBODY COULD TOUCH THEM!) uh, when I was pretty old … like 13 or something. Ha.
