Nine Thousand One Hundred and Twenty Four Days Old

Friday, December 4th, 2009

December has always been my favorite month. Really it’s no surprise given that my birthday is the 11th and duh! Christmas. It’s always been a smorgasbord of presents and attention.

But really, I’m about to be twenty-five. Like a quarter of a century. Like it’s time for me to grow the eff up.

So in honor of growing up and being an adult, this year we’re donating money for Christmas. Because during economic downturns, the non-profit groups get hit the hardest. Which is something you hear all the time, but still don’t take action. At least I know we don’t. So we’re using this holiday as our catalyst to spread our good fortune with others. One of the first places we donated was the honors program at the college I graduated from. As for the charities, we still have to decide on that one. It’s all so overwhelming! Do I want to help the puppies at the SPCA or what about the starving children? Or diseases? There are so many people and animals and causes that need help in any way.

So here’s my proposition, anyone out there that was already planning on getting me a birthday or Christmas gift. You? Yes you. Mom or Cale? No, not you guys. You’re not off the hook. ;) Instead of spending the money you were going to spend on me, choose your favorite charity and send it that way. At a loss for where to donate? Well I’ve got just the place for you:

This upcoming July 10-11th I’m participating in the Avon Walk in San Francisco. I’m pretty excited about it. It’s two days where we walk a marathon the first day and a half marathon the next. All to raise money for breast cancer research. A sea of pink will be crossing the golden gate bridge and weaving through the streets of Marin. I’ve never committed myself to something of this magnitude, but I’m glad to do so for such a great cause. I have quite a large sum to fund raise, so if you’re at a loss at what to get me for Christmas or my birthday, please donate towards my walk; it’s tax deductible (if you itemize) and goes to a much better cause.

Until then, I’ll just be getting my booty in shape because walking 39 miles? yowzers.

P.S. Since when is it already December? Seriously?

You cannot bring me down

This is our moment. This is our time.

We have elected a new president, and I am so proud.

But not of my hometown. For anyone who thought I was too harsh on Bakersfield in my political post, a message I received this evening supported everything I said:

i had no idea of what you supported. i’m dissapointed and can’t believe it.
so are u still a follower of Christ then?

And thereby ended over a decade-long friendship.

Needless to say, my evening of celebration was tainted with sheer hatred. HATRED of what people think they are entitled to say under the guise of religion when clearly their heart is so black.

I still wait for the results of Prop 8, but if that message were any indicator of what California has waiting for me, I am filled with trepidation.

See you in the morning.

Very Very Important News

I got glasses. I’m still 20/20 but I have mild convergence insufficiency, which could be treated with vision therapy whenever I can find the time to do it. Until then, I’ll be lazy and just wear glasses. They’re just for reading and the computer.. but then since when am I ever not on the computer.. so I’ll probably be wearing them a lot. Pardon the no-make-up-ness of this picture. Oh yeah and I voted.

Well not just me, WE voted. Which was super fun being able to go to the polls together. Our first time as a married couple to go together. I think the last time I had to vote, I did absentee, which is silly since our little town had no line and it’s literally just right down the street.

Don’t we both look so smart now?

You may be wondering about the onslaught of blog posts I’ve been doing lately.. That’s because I’m Nablopomo-ing it up this November. Is anyone else? You are? Than add me!

And there is hope

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

Last week while I was in Orlando, I was ecstatic when I heard the quick announcement on the news that said Bill Clinton and Obama would be rallying in Orlando on Wednesday evening. Hey, I’m in Orlando! And I’m free that evening! Sweeeeeet! This is stuff that never happens in California. We never get anyone rallying because we’re kind of a gimme state. So I would finally get my opportunity to experience the excitement that comes with a political rally.

So I dragged two of my willing coworkers with me. They got to see a new Stephanie. One in her sneakers, hopping and skipping with shear excitement.

There were so many people, all different, but all equally as inspired. The cold stayed away, with so many people around to keep us warm.

He was first introduced by Bill Clinton who gave a wonderfully motivating speech.

And then Barack spoke around midnight, and everyone listened and cheered and felt the hope.

Every single thing that was said at that rally is something I believe in. I look at Obama, and I see someone who I can trust. Who I identify with. Someone who is educated, intelligent, level-headed. Someone who will lead our country and do an amazing job.

I left the rally with a full heart and tears rimming my eyelids. I sang “Only in America, Where we dream as big as we want to, We all get a chance, Everybody gets to dance” and I danced, in my sneakers, embarrassing my coworkers but so happily oblivious to the crowds around me.

So tomorrow I will be watching the news closely. And I hope the only discomfort I feel is the effect of lactose on my tummy after my free ice cream cone. It’s an exciting exciting time folks.
